Your Jewel Horoscope As Told By Fellows’ Upcoming Antique & Modern Sale

zodiac3 zodiac11

Are you into Astrology? Aside from day-to-day predictions, I love learning about my sign and seeing how it compares with my life and how I live. It fascinates me and from what I’ve read, I really do think my sign matches with my personality, both the negatives and positives. Growing up, I would read my daily horoscope in the local newspaper regularly–it was that and the “Puppies For Sale” classifieds which I read, and nothing more. I thought it would be fun to put together my own “Jewel Horoscope” based on astrological sign characteristics using jewelry from the upcoming Antique & Modern Jewellery Sale from Fellows Auctions. The sale is set for Thursday, March 10th, 2016.

Be sure to check out the entire catalogue online and register to bid!

Aries, March 21-April 19

Lot 451: A double ram head bangle was an easy choice for Aries, as your sign is represented by a ram. Adventurous, courageous, and quick-witted…so many strong characteristics make up an Aries that this bangle would coordinate almost too well with your demeanor! Done in 18k yellow gold and set with rubies and diamonds.

Taurus, April 20-May 20

Lot 251: A classic, investment piece is right up your alley if you’re a Taurus and this lapis necklace is exactly that. Done in yellow gold with Italian origin, sleek and modern combine to form this beauty. Suspended from a belcher-style chain and measuring 18 inches in length.

zodiac6 zodiac4

Gemini, May 21-June 20

Lot 82: Nothing more “Gemini” than these earrings–first off, because there are two, a pair if you will, and secondly, they are mismatched. One earring features rock quartz, the other blue chalcedony–two very different colors and gems. These are done in 18k yellow gold and set with ruby and diamonds as well.

Cancer, June 21-July 22

Lot 67: A pair of yellow gold ear pendants, these have such a unique style to them. The are of the verge of being kitschy, while at the same time so classic/modern. These earrings reflect the strength and compassion of a Cancer sign.

zodiac zodiac12

Leo, July 23-August 22

Lot 533: A late 19th century micromosaic brooch depicting two birds together–possibly swans? A Leo’s ambition is mighty, leading me to believe a fellow Leo must be the artist behind this micromosaic, a painstakingly daunting task of placing each tiny piece of glass or pottery down to create a beautiful scene. If the birds are really swans, this can represent your passion and loyalty.

Virgo, August 23-September 22

Lot 84: Virgo’s perfectionist attitude would love this ring–as well as the beautiful diamonds in this Edwardian stunner. The diamonds total about one carat and are very clean, and yes Virgos are known to be clean-freaks. 18k gold with a platinum top, typical of the time period.

zodiac7 zodiac10

Libra, September 23-October 22

Lot 256: Known for being a great host, I can picture these gorgeous aquamarine and diamond earrings dangling from your Libra ears as you are gathering a party together! This pair is dynamic, with just the right amount of color vs. diamond sparkle. Elegance is also a characteristic of yours, and these match perfectly!

Scorpio, October 23-November 21

Lot 439: Big and bold, this all diamond ring set with a black gemstone in the center commands attention, just as you do Scorpio! Over two carats of sparkling color, different hues creating a powerful combination. This piece is done in 18k white gold. Love it!

zodiac9 zodiac5

Sagittarius, November 22-December 21

Lot 510: A late 19th century gold and garnet snake necklace represents our Sagittarius sign. Both rare in the antique world and covetable, same goes for your outlook on life! Always spiritual in nature, this snake necklace will remind you of how good vs. evil first began. Such a symbolic piece for a philosophical person.

Capricorn, December 22-January 19

Lot 318: As a Capricorn, you prefer luxury, so what could be more luxurious than a Bvlgari serpenti ring. This particular ring is done in 18k rose gold. All the viable markings and hallmarks are there–this piece is just waiting to be worn in the chicest way possible!

zodiac2 zodiac8

Aquarius, January 20-February 18

Lot 340: As a trendsetter, you go for it–this exquisite Cartier brooch set with aquamarines will do it for you! Aquarius is a water sign, so that also lines up with the gemstone colors and look of the brooch. This piece would look stunning clipped to an elegant black top or attached to a velvet choker. As an Aquarius, you’ll have fun with all the possibilities!

Pisces, February 19-March 20

Lot 2: Figa charms for a strong, water sign (yes, one even has a fish dangling) perfect for the Pisces. This piece is sentimental in nature and can represent many things, which lines up with how empathetic and caring Pisces are. Looks like there are five charms that dangle from the main figa–such a cool piece!

On the Grayscale: Sophisticated Accents by Bvlgari

This season’s fashion trends, so far, have showed us that the world is not just black and white. Style enthusiasts can discover all the gray colors that exist in between by viewing the designs of this year’s latest fashion. The color has quickly become a target, as fall’s “it” color, appearing in designer collections all across the runways. Balenciaga, Valentino, Hermès and Bvlgari are a couple high-end brands that have been debuting gray shades throughout their ensembles, especially during NYC Fashion Week. Ladies and gentlemen can incorporate just about every gray hue there is – blues, tans, greens, pinks and purples – into their outfit.

As it is said, “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,” which means the color of gray is only as bleak as you make it. How you opt to wear gray in your outfit can transform its typical connotation of being a bland color into an attractive tone. As you style up cashmere, wool and leather throughout the cool weather months, accessorize with striking gray luxury jewelry and watches to complete your look. If you’re still not too excited about integrating gray into your wardrobe, consider embracing it with other colorful, corresponding tones. Like a gloomy cloud that delivers rain to blooming flowers, its manifestation in upscale fashion can enhance the vibe you want to express.

We’ve turned to Bvlgari as one of our main influencers for styling with gray tones, using high-end accessories. Here we feature some of their models from our selection that make ideal accents for creating a classy, sophisticated presence.

The extreme contrast of black against white and gray in the design of the Platinum Limited Edition AC 38P by Bvlgari for $11,995 provides a sleek, masculine look for the polished gentleman. This timepiece is one of only 99 in existence worldwide, featuring a silver dial, platinum case, black bezel and black rubber bracelet. Three chronograph subdials are displayed, along with the indication of the date, hours, minutes and seconds.

BVLGARI GRAY

Stainless steel and ceramic elements produce a light dove gray tone to express a mellow, exotic vibe in the Serpenti Spiga One Twirl Wristwatch by Bvlgari for $4,410. A jewelry bracelet and luxury timepiece mixed into one, the design is exquisitely one-of-a-kind. The white dial indicates the hours and minutes, taking the shape of a snake slowly coiling.

BVLGARI GRAY2

The chalcedony gemstone boasts a blue-gray hue within the Tronchetto 18K White Gold Chalcedony Ring by Bvlgari for $950, showcasing a bulky appearance. A gold outline travels around the stone surrounded by thick 18K white gold.

BVLGARI GRAY3

Gray makes an appealing background for incorporating patterns, as demonstrated in the Parentesi 18K White Gold Partial Pave Necklace by Bvlgari for $10,815. A glimmering partial diamond pave travels amongst a unique pattern made of 18K white gold.

BVLGARI GRAY4

For a simple, gray hue that dominates, the B.ZERO1 18K White Gold Hoop Earrings by Bvlgari for $1,925 would pair well. The 18K white gold earrings display a smooth, shiny surface that reflects the light, while letters of the label’s name are imprinted along the sides.

Fall/Winter Favorites from Levinson Jewelers, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

picks

I don’t know about you, but as soon as the weather starts to get cold and summer turns into fall…and then fall turns into winter, I like to head south! You can call me a snow bird, but I like to call it smart! 😉 Florida boasts two of my favorite things–warm weather and Levinson Jewelers! The store has become an iconic landmark, located on the famed Las Olas Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale. For 30 years, the store has served customers from all parts of the globe, with their reach continually growing. If you’re escaping the cold and find yourself in the Ft. Lauderdale area, make sure to stop by and check out their fine selection of jewelry. They carry some of the most exquisite, prestigious brands–like Ivanka Trump, Gucci, Bulgari, Mattioli, Penny Preville, and many more. The incredibly popular Buddha Mama & Lana Jewelry are also a part of their repertoire.

I took some time out to find my favorite Fall/Winter picks from Levinson Jewelers–all of which can be found in their online boutique! I gravitated toward yellow gold pieces with splashes of black…bold looks, with subtle detailing. I’m crazy over the sleek yellow gold earrings that I chose–very geometric and modern. Black diamonds also won me over, especially on that Gucci ring. The tassel is so fun and would make a great statement piece–I can’t imagine someone NOT stopping and asking about it when worn. Pieces with open spaces and asymmetrical design will look great with cozy sweaters and boots for this season!

My picks from Levinson Jewelers:

1. Black diamond tassel bracelet by Ivanka Trump, Price: $18,000

2. Rock quartz three-stone ring with diamonds by Ivanka Trump, Price: $3,400

3. Bvlgari Monete antiche ring in 18k yellow gold with an antique coin, Price upon request

4. Bvlgari Serpenti bracelet in yellow gold with mother of pearl, Price upon request

This necklace is very special to me as its design lies in a childhood experience. I dont remember how old I was when this happened but we had gone to Star hotel for a meal and I happened to see a curio shop there which had shelves of jewelry. One particular design that caught my eye was a multi stranded necklace of faceted beads and crystals in graduating colors (pink, red, blue and green) and I was fascinated as that was the first time I was seeing jewelry that was not gold, silver or just costume pieces. This one looked expensive and spelt designer. I later came to know that it was a very common design, you can see it across jewelry stores and malls in India, but to me, for a very long time, it was symbolic of designer jewelry. This multicolor blooming lotus is a tribute (in spirit) to that, moment in life, I’ll always remember.

Sudya collection – Vermeil line

This year, I have been holding back on posting my own work in this blog as there was too much of it last year and I started feeling very narcissistic, so I have been focusing on other people’s work instead. But it time to do a little unveiling of my own work – My Sudya collection of precious and semi precious jewelry

This year, I have been holding back on posting my own work in this blog as there was too much of it last year and I started feeling very narcissistic, so I have been focusing on other people’s work instead. But it time to do a little unveiling of my own work – My Sudya collection of precious and semi precious jewelry. I did pick a few pieces to for the St.Patricks day showcase but here is the full unveil, Line by Line.
The first, the most important and the most expensive of the three lines in Sudya, is the Vermeil line of Jewelry. I specialise in necklaces, but this collection is geared towards earrings as I was getting earring requests for some time now. They are all cocktail earrings, meant to be worn with dressy clothes like – cocktail/evening wear dresses or sarees.

Of all the pieces in the line, Zizi is my personal favourite, I long how it dangles and how the amertrine catches the light with a tiny purple streak. Its the ultimate cocktail earrings for me!!
Zizi Earrings
long cocktail earrings in 24K gold plated 925 silver enclosed natural amertrine (off white with purple streaks) paired with lotus leaf charm in 97% silver front plated in gold and hand formed simple vermeil ear hook Length from piercing – 53mm
Anyway, coming back to vermeil, just as all that glitters is not gold and all jewelry that is gold plated or dipped cannot be considered Vermeil in the true sense. The vermeil findings and wire that I have used are 925 sterling silver to 97% silver that has been plated with 2microns of 24K gold. The result is a beautiful deep gold color, unlike the gaudy orange gold we usually see here in Indian Jewelry stores.
Most of my blog readers, would know of my affinity (and attraction) to sapphire, so imagine my delight when I gold to work with real sapphire stones. I have picked three sapphires – Gray, rose and blue, all raw, chunky, natural, untreated ( the blue stone just has a rough cut)
For the gray Sapphire (the supplier called it black though) I picked a bright gold rose, earring finding just to play with the warm – cool contrast
sapphire rose earrings
VER 18-XD 17mm natural untreated black sapphire (opaque) enclosed in vermeil (24K gold on 925 silver) with vermeil (24K on 97% silver) gold rose flower hook Length from piercing – 37mm
Rubro earrings – VER 20
natural untreated pink sapphire stone and pink hydro quartz stone enclosed in vermeil (24K plated 925 silver) with hand made vermeil (24K plated 97% silver) hook

I originally named these Rubella earrings, as I liked how it sounded, but a google search alter I found out that is was the name of a virus 🙁 So I named it Rubro to signify the red shades

Heartfelt is a long cocktail earring that can be quite a head turner piece. It symbolises (raw) passion and the spores on the sapphire along with the bronze charm add an ethnic feeling to this piece.

Heartfelt Sapphire earrings – VER-17 DB
22mm natural untreated raw blue sapphire vermeil (24K gold on 925 silver) with vermeil (24K on 97% silver) Textured hook and carved bronze hearts. Length – 64mm
Juliet drops – VER 16 – DG
Long elegant earrings with green onyx Stones enclosed in vermeil (24K gold on 925 silver) with handmade vermeil hook (24K on 97% silver)

Then here are the Juliet drops I featured in my St.Patricks day post, Extremely simple and elegant these are a classic, best worn with an updo and a Bateau neck.
In the yellow version, which features beautiful chalcedony stones I have used rose gold earhooks for a tonal gradation effect

rose garden earrings -VER 19 – YL
Long yellow chalcedony drops with vermeil (24K on 97% silver) – with vermeil (24K on 97% silver) flower hook in rose gold finish Length from piercing – 47mm, rose width 10mm

Finally, Pink Lotus Princess earrings – Inspired by the Pink saree of Goddess MahaLakshmi as she sits on a lotus. I had made two of these which sold out as soon as I made them.

Pink lotus princess earring – SOLD
18mm natural pink chalcedony stones enclosed in vermeil (24K gold on 925 silver) with 20X9mm vermeil lotus hook (24K on 97% silver)

Unfortunately, I had read market wrong, people seem to prefer gold studs than danglers, atleast locally. The only stud in this vermeil line, incidentally the first piece I created in this collection, belongs to my mom. The Serpentine beads keep it extremely lightweight and working well with most silk sarees.

Excepting the last two designs, everything is still available for sale and you can mail be to avail pricing and order them.

So Thats the new vermeil line – how did you find the designs? Do you think I should make more in the future?
Doing Precious jewelry was a big, bold step for me in a different direction, though I didnt make every piece by myself like I usually do, I spent a lot of time, money and effort in conceptualizing, sourcing and coordinating with different suppliers and artisans to get it done – which is much more difficult to do than just making them. I learnt a lot of lessons in waiting, teamwork, photography during Sudya, I really hope it does well.

I Will post Silver and gold plated line in parts as they are quite big.
I hope you find it interesting
Cheers

Gemstones in Green – part 1

Pantone has shifted its color of the year from Green to pink but it will always remain one of my favourite colors. In school I wore a green pinafore daily for 14 years (kg -12th) so I hated the color and would buy no other clothes in green, but after a few years, I started missing it and now I cant do without green in my wardrobe, especially green colored stones in jewelry.Green is a gender neutral color, if you get the shade right

Pantone has shifted its color of the year from Green to pink but it will always remain one of my favourite colors. In school I wore a green pinafore daily for 14 years (kg -12th) so I hated the color and would buy no other clothes in green, but after a few years, I started missing it and now I cant do without green in my wardrobe, especially green colored stones in jewelry.
Green is a gender neutral color, if you get the shade right. It flatters most skin tones and gives a calming and soothing feeling. As its the color of nature, there are so many different gemstones in green, so I would be writing about green gemstones in two parts starting with the well known ones.

List of Green color Gemstones

1.Emerald – “Nothing Greens Greener than emeralds”. Derived from the word “Esmeraude, emeraude or smaragdus (meaning green)” Emerald allures Gods, kings and common folk alike with its class, beauty and radiance. Shah Jahan inscribed sacred texts in emerals and wore them as talismans. The Incas had an emerald goddess, mummies from ancient Egypt were found with huge emerald necklaces and emeralds are regarded as the gemstone for goddess venus. Emerald tends to have inclusions and sometimes surface breaking fissures and they are oiled to improve their clarity. This member of the Beryl family can be opaque, semi opaque or transparent with the transparent ones being extremely valuable.

2. Jade -Treasured by the Chinese, Mayans, Toltecs as a royal gemstone, Jade is believed to protect people from harm and was believed to protect the body after death. That is maybe the reason why it is found in many ancient tombstones. The ancient jade of China is nephrite jade whereas today, Jadeite Jade is considered to be real jade as its rarer. Jade is the March birthstone. Read my detailed post on Jades here

3. Peridot – The clear, fresh lime green colors is what makes Peridot very attractive. This gem form of the mineral olivine, is often treasured as Goddess Peele’s tears in Hawaii. Romans referred to it as the “evening emerald” because of its light green color which didn’t become dark by night and hence could be mined in the evenings. Gemologists suggest peridot to improve the function of the adrenal glands, and to reduce emotional strain. Peridot is the birthstone for august .

4. Serpentine – The serpentine groups found in serpentinite rocks is composed of various minerals with main members being Antigorite, lizardite and Chrysotile

5.Diopside- Gemstone quality diopside can be found as the black star diopside and the chrome diopside which is green due to trace amounts of chromium. The natural Vivid green chrome diopside is mined in a remote location in Eastern Siberia known as Inagli in the state of Sakha.

6.Green Zircon: Derived from the Persian word – Zargun which means gold color, Natural zircons are one of the heaviest gemstones available and are different from the man made cubic zirconia. They are present in many colors, including green

My mother brought it to my attention, that it was not clear that I was talking about various gemstones in a typical post in this series, rather than varieties of the same one. so I would like to make it clear, I am grouping gemstones by color and not by chemical formula. For example Emerald, golden beryl and chrysoberyl belong to the same beryl family, but I am discussing golden beryl and chrysoberyl under yellow gemstones and emerald under green. Stones like Sapphire or Topaz come in various colors and the lists are by color so you might find the same gemstone in more than one post but with regard to a particular color. I hope this helps.
