David Webb Makes Their Debut at Couture

Don’t ever say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. At nearly 70 years old, David Webb still reigns supreme as an iconic, American jewelry house full of the most exquisite designs. One look at a David Webb piece and you KNOW it is a David Webb piece. From the finest craftsmanship, to the bold enamels and well-known motifs, the jewelry has been delighting since 1948. They have a strong following, a large amount of die-hard collectors and a presence known worldwide; not to mention a showroom/workshop located on Madison Avenue in NYC and a boutique in Beverly Hills. You’d think debuting for the first time at a tradeshow would not be on their agenda. Could such a legendary American brand make a move like that? And if so, how could they “do it their way”?

I was very curious myself…however feeling more excited than any other emotion. I made sure that David Webb was first on my Couture agenda–Villa 112 was the place and I was ready to gawk, gander and swoon. Walking into the Villa, I thought I was in their NYC boutique for a minute. Luxury was brought to the desert and the animal kingdom followed along too. I got to see many of the pieces that hit the red carpet over the past year–like totem necklaces, which one was worn by Nicole Richie back in November and I still can’t think of a better look. I love seeing David Webb worn on the red carpet and it is always magical when it happens. Speaking of red carpet, nothing would look more incredible than the turquoise and emerald necklace I got to try on while at Couture–could you imagine that on the red carpet?! Hopefully it will happen in the future. I also got to revisit some animal favorites–like panthers and cats (rings) and dolphins, fish and snakes (bracelets).

One new aspect of David Webb which debuted during Vegas Jewelry Week, is a scaled down collection with a lower price point than typical pieces. This new collection, called Motif, features black and white enamel and appeals to all ages. There are also new entry-level pieces from the Tool Chest collection, which I actually am a proud-owner of from the off-chance I entered my name into the drawing to win a pair of Nail Stud Earrings. I couldn’t believe I won! I’ve obviously been wearing them ever since. (The next day I wore them to the Antique Show, and almost every dealer commented on them!) I’ve included a photo of the earrings above (last photo) and they are done in 18k hammered gold and are only $680.

Be sure to stop by David Webb if you’re ever in the NYC area or Beverly Hills to check the new collection out. If you thought you’d never be able to afford a piece of David Webb, think again–this new collection may be your chance!

Special thanks to Levi Higgs of David Webb for taking the photos!

The Cannes Film Festival is arguably one of the best showcases for the top international jewelry houses to showcase their finest and brightest gems and designs for the world to see.

This 12-day festival brings out the most exceptional designs and creations from the likes of Chopard to Harry Winston.

It’s where you can see leading ladies like Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain as well as ingénues like Dakota Fanning and Rihanna parading down the red carpet in the latest couture gowns and decadent jewels.

Here are the best jewels from the most revered jewelry houses that were showcased on the festival’s red carpet.

The jewelry house has a deep history with the Festival as it’s been the official partner and designer of the coveted Palme d’Or trophy awarded to the most critically-acclaimed movie. This year, the buzz on the red carpet was their collaboration with music super-star Rihanna.

Gem Gossip Visits Jessica McCormack in London!

DSCF3607 DSCF3600 Untitled DSCF3620 DSCF3599 DSCF3614 Untitled DSCF3592 JessicaMcCormack Untitled Untitled

Walking into Jessica McCormack‘s “Jewelry House,” as I’ve coined it last year when it first opened its doors, was like walking on water. Did I ever think I would get the chance to be here and meet such a beloved jewelry designer?! Never! The whole time I couldn’t tell if I loved the jewelry or the space more. I can presume it was a combination of both, and now that I’m back from my London calling, Jessica’s incredible designs and her New Zealand charm have surely won me over. Also, as stated before, her jewelry designs are truly in a league of their own and seeing them in person was quite the treat.

Getting the chance the stack diamond upon diamond, and lust after big emerald rings and even bigger yellow diamond rings was once in a lifetime moment for me! Her cases house some pretty jewels nestled atop of crushed velvet-lined insides. The most elegant antiques are hung on the walls and displayed throughout. Jessica’s Love Letters collection is creatively displayed, with each letter of the alphabet on a card, along with the equivalent gemstone written alongside, and a mini-bowl filled with each gem. One is invited to spell out a message or word with the gemstones, similar to an antique Regard ring from the Victorian Era, but with a more modern feel. One girl had her maiden name spelled out in a ring, as well as her new married last name in another. I thought that was such a cool idea!

Thanks to Jessica for such a fun and surreal day and for letting me sit and photograph until my heart’s content. And thanks to Susan Farmer and LoveGold!

Q & A with By Gold Girl, Lauren Kaminsky

560899_481335248544764_1373132601_n Lauren Kaminsky, better known as By Gold Girl, is a twenty-something entrepreneur living in NYC who has a love for all things GOLD. Not only are we both contributers to LoveGold‘s website as the blogging gurus, but we both stand five foot something (depending on how tall our heels are) with loads of jewels on! I got to meet Lauren in Vegas when we covered the Couture Show, where we talked about the ways she’s been revolutionizing her father’s pawn business, EZ Pawn Corp and how jewelry obsessed we are. Lauren has been saving items from being melted one jewel at a time, and curating items for resale in a whole new way! I caught up with the busy business girl to ask her a few questions!

I remember coming in to my Dad’s store, EZ Pawn Corp, with my mom on the weekends to pick out jewelry for her to wear. We would sift through the vintage pieces, very similar to what I do now, except she would pick out the most unique items that I always thought were so ugly! Now today I see the pieces on her and I love them, I guess vintage was an acquired taste I developed! She also had a knack at finding the most beautiful pieces and taught me about all the big name jewelry houses- Cartier, Tiffany & Co, & Van Cleef, to name a few – I definitely get my jewelry style from her!

f39f61c334bf65fa_lauren-kaminsky.preview bubble2

I always was interested in the business but was never fully sold on it being my career. Looking back, that may have been because I never fully appreciated or realized its maximum business potential until I was in college. I was studying Business Management at Boston University and I started working for my dad as a summer job going into my senior year. Gold was on the rise, and our business was growing, & my dad needed my help.

While I took pride in providing a financial service and making collateral loans to customers, it was that summer I remember falling in love with an overlooked portion of the business- the jewelry-sales side of it. My dad was very busy managing the pawn sector of the company that as a result, the vintage jewelry he got in was usually melted or sold to wholesalers. Now, I oversee an entire department dedicated to making sure nothing slips by without me seeing it first.

BeautyandEssex1 5569259449_75e3d2cca9

There is no such thing as a typical workday for me! As an entrepreneur in NYC, running a 12-store company, and a retail store at downtown hot-spot Beauty & Essex my days can take me anywhere. However, most of the time I am at one of my branch stores overseeing the operations. Each week there is always something new going on- this week it’s our 12th store opening!

bygoldgirl bubble3

I love being able to have flexibility and make decisions on how to run my family business. Of course, my dad always has final say, but lately he’s been really nice about testing out my ideas. I also really love saying that I’m a pawnbroker, just to get some good reactions out of people! Like any job, there are its downsides. Some days are a lot harder than others and I have to make business decisions that business school could have never prepared me for, but like anything else in life- I learn from my mistakes and move on.

meandlauren q5

That’s the hardest question! Currently I love my 18kt gold stardust necklace, it has a wavy disk filled with pave diamonds. It is great for summer and when the sun hits the disk it sparkles and shines better than any other piece I have.
