The Cannes Film Festival is arguably one of the best showcases for the top international jewelry houses to showcase their finest and brightest gems and designs for the world to see.

This 12-day festival brings out the most exceptional designs and creations from the likes of Chopard to Harry Winston.

It’s where you can see leading ladies like Charlize Theron and Jessica Chastain as well as ingénues like Dakota Fanning and Rihanna parading down the red carpet in the latest couture gowns and decadent jewels.

Here are the best jewels from the most revered jewelry houses that were showcased on the festival’s red carpet.

CHOPARD:

The jewelry house has a deep history with the Festival as it’s been the official partner and designer of the coveted Palme d’Or trophy awarded to the most critically-acclaimed movie. This year, the buzz on the red carpet was their collaboration with music super-star Rihanna.

Top Gold Jewelry Trends for 2017, with May Is Gold Month

May Is Gold Month | Gem Gossip May Is Gold Month | Gem Gossip May Is Gold Month | Gem Gossip

This is my fourth year partnering with May Is Gold Month and I think it goes without saying that I love all things karat gold! In preparing for this trend post, I thought it would be a good idea to spread out almost all of my jewelry across my entire desk. Scattering each piece allowed for all the memories, sentiment, special occasions and sparkle to overflow at once. I was reminded how powerful gold can be in more ways than one. It also helped me fully understand why May Is Gold Month exists and why they are so adamant about celebrating a single metal.

When found in the ground, gold can look like an undesirable pebble; dirty and hiding its value. It is the makers and jewelry designers who unlock the true beauty of gold when they create a piece of jewelry using gold. It comes to life and takes shape–it can be made to look shiny, textured, brushed, or hammered. It can be rose, green, red, or brown (even some other colors too). A single piece of gold jewelry can provoke laughter, tears and joy, all at the same time. It also can unlock the trends, feelings and historical happenings from which time period it was made.

All of my karat gold jewelry has a special place and meaning in my life. Some pieces were created during the turn-of-the-century, when other metals were being discovered and created…but gold always reigned supreme. Other pieces were designed specially for me by jewelry friends who have become like family. And my most important pieces of karat gold jewelry have been passed down to me, with tender stories and rich histories. It is my passion to teach others how to take all these jewels and style them in numerous ways, and it is May Is Gold Month‘s commitment to celebrating this that makes May one of my favorite months!

So this year’s trends will keep you on your toes–let’s get creative, as I challenge you each week to showing me how you style, wear and show me your karat gold with these six weekly trends–have fun!

Wrist Ornaments | Gem Gossip

Trend #1: Wrist Ornaments

My wrists have been BFF with these Victorian hinged bangles since the day I acquired each one. You know how the Cartier Love bracelets are known to “become a part of you” once you wear one–it is the same with these guys to me–and better yet, not every girl has a Victorian bangle. These are all 14k yellow gold and are uniquely me. I’m hoping to add another to my stack soon!

Jumping Through Hoops | Gem Gossip

Trend #2: Jumping Through Hoops

Let’s face it, hoops never go out of style–they may go on a hiatus every so often–but come back even stronger than ever every time. Like right now! Hoops are so popular–I’ve had these large, very light-weight 14k gold hoops for years now. I decided to update my hoop look by adding these post hoops that are tiny but very wide by J. Hannah. I love how modern they can look and how easy they can pair with just about anything!

Finger Frill | Gem Gossip

Trend #3: Finger Frill

Ah, easily my favorite of the weekly trends. Lately I’ve been loving all-gold looks paired together…ones that are geometric and linear in nature, with bends, twists, and curves. The newest addition is the one I’m wearing on my ring finger. It is a simple wave and the wave perfectly fits and accentuates my engagement ring. It has been my go-to wedding band as of late. A simple design can create such a unique impact!

Neck Jazz | Gem Gossip

Trend #4: Neck Jazz

My neck has been getting extra love lately as I’ve been really into karat gold necklaces, pendants and different types of chains. I added a solid gold wire necklace a few months ago to my jewelry wardrobe and it has been a game-changer. So many things I can do with it, the possibilities are limitless! I sometimes wear it alone, I can easily throw on a pendants or a grouping of charms, and I can layer it up as well, like seen here. I’ve been collecting lots of Egyptian Revival pendants and charms, like my ankh I’m wearing. I also can’t get enough of my DMD Metal Shaman necklace with a diamond drool and my simple diamond with no setting whatsoever (it is a pierced, free-standing diamond) necklace from La Brune & La Blonde.

Ear Decor | Gem Gossip

Trend #5: Ear Decor

How many of you got a new ear piercing this past year just because of how trendy karat gold earrings are?! Whether you pile on stud after stud, go for an ear cuff look, or go big and bold, ear decor has never been more popular! One of my favorite earrings are by Grace Lee Designs and she calls these Whisper Mobiles as each is like an art installation on your ear, but they are whisper-thin and ultra lightweight. I am wearing three different styles in one ear, all done in 14k yellow gold.

Gold for Guys | Gem Gossip

Trend #6: Gold for Guys

In a world with over 7 billion inhabitants, it is kismet that we find a partner that wants to spend the rest of its life on Earth with you. I happened to find that special person and what made our relationship even better was that he loves jewelry just as much as I do! From karat gold medallions, to karat gold sword stick pins, and everything in between, my husband loves wearing and collecting gold. My husband’s advice to any guy? “You should invest in a really nice karat gold bracelet that easily goes with your everyday style.” I agree!!

Gem Jewelry Boutique | Gem Gossip

Our last stop before heading home from our quick but amazing #JewelryRoadTrip to Chicago was Gem Jewelry Boutique, located a few minutes outside of Chicago in Oak Park. I had to see for myself Laura’s talked about and infamous curating skills–both jewelry-wise and display-wise. She is undeniably talented when it comes to putting things together, whether it is an entire store, a single display, an outfit, or a jewelry look. Gem has been open for nearly 13 years, with four different locations over the years. Most recently they moved to a new location which opened in June of 2015 and is what you’re seeing in the photos above. It is Laura’s most favorite location out of the four she has had, and as you can see, rightfully so! Laura says, “I wanted this location to invoke a sophisticated, calming environment yet with the slight edginess that depicts Gem’s image.”

The storefront is a beautiful jewel in its own right (I love the gold-leaf on the windows) and when you walk through the front door, you are immediately met with the open and airiness of the space. It proves to be an ideal jewelry showroom. The gems and jewelry sparkle in the sunlight, and the dark gray walls with mirrored and gold accents make you feel like you’re actually inside a jewelry box. The custom sliding cases and the large cabinet against the wall were all created specially for the space, thanks to Laura’s husband Michael. Another very sentimental addition to the store--the giant antique gold mirror–which was restored and outfitted with back-lighting, was essentially a wedding present from Michael, but ended up being the perfect focal point for the store. And I can agree! I love the mirror…and I can attest to the fact that jewelry stores NEED mirrors. I think they are essential!

Laura hadn’t always been on a clear path to opening a jewelry boutique from the beginning. She was actually the one designing and creating jewelry, teaching herself along the way, taking a couple metalsmithing classes and being inspired. This was back in 1995 when she lived in Portland, Oregon. Before that, it was her grandmother Lucile, who lived to be 101 years old, who infused a passion for jewelry in Laura from a very young age. Laura reminisces, “Each time I’d see her, she’d take me into her bedroom and on the bed we’d lay out all her boxes and jewelry while she told me the story behind each piece. It was heaven to me! And at the end, she’d always give me a piece. I learned how jewelry tells a story.”

One fateful day, Laura strolled into Twist in Portland and had an epiphany. In 2004 her first store opened, mainly selling her own designs and some vintage pieces. It goes without saying that the store has evolved very much over the years, especially beginning with what is featured. About two years into having the store, Laura attended a market show in NYC and a whole new world opened up before her eyes. She became passionate about supporting and learning about other designers, especially women artisans. Laura says, “Over the years, the store has evolved in that we now carry more designers than ever and I am focusing on a finer brand. The price point has risen over the years because I am carrying designers that are reputable, unique and are not mass producing their work. I appreciate “hand made” jewelry and especially jewelry made by women. I try to curate with that point of view.”

Designers like Vale Jewelry, Brooke Gregson, Emilie Shapiro, Blanca Monros Gomez, Arik Kastan, Megan Thorne, wwake, and Ruth Tomlinson are favorites and staples amongst Gem’s lineup. One of their newest additions, Pascale Monvoisin was an Instagram discovery for the store–which proves to designers that you can be discovered on social media! Although the mix of designers is eclectic and spans different countries and different continents, they all flow together and are able to be styled easily for a cohesive look because of Laura’s eye. You may see Gem Token as one of the designers featured several times in the photos above–that is the store’s own line of jewelry! Gem is also really excited about adding a few more brands to their roster, including Rusty Thought which is coming soon!

I loved visiting Gem and if you’re in the Chicago area, you are lucky to have such a great local jewelry store! Whatever your jewelry needs are or if you need a special gift, you will leave happy. I loved seeing a few customers come into the store while I was there and each person had a better day because they chose to come inside Gem. I know I sure did!

How 3 Nashville Entrepreneurs Style Their Dana Seng Jewelry

Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip Dana Seng Jewelry | Gem Gossip

The life of an entrepreneur: forever in motion, on the go, and fast-paced. Sometimes you need your jewelry to be that way too! I’m always on the hunt for something I know I can throw on and automatically look good, something I can style with a variety of different outfits, and something that is timeless and will withstand a hectic lifestyle. The piece of jewelry that does it for me is my Dana Seng birthstone initial charm necklace, without a doubt! It goes with just about anything…when I put it on I already feel put together…and the best part is that it was made for me! I picked out the letter I wanted and the gemstone I wanted–D for Danielle (my first name) and sapphire for my birthstone (and luckily blue is a color that goes great with almost my entire wardrobe).

Dana Seng Jewelry prides itself on creating jewelry that fits this exact remedy–for “every style” and for “every woman.” I thought it would be fun to see how three different women style their own Dana Seng Jewelry pieces, so I took three Nashville entrepreneurs (myself included) and without any direction, told everyone to style their piece with what fits their lifestyle and how it fits in their everyday look. It was so interesting to see how a simple initial gemstone necklace or ring could be worn in different ways, suit unique styles and become a staple to someone’s wardrobe. One thing is for sure, we all agreed how simple, yet statement-making our birthstone initial pieces are and how much they’ve become an everyday occurrence within our style.

Let’s find out more:

Danielle

By day, I’m writing my blog Gem Gossip, editing photos, pulling ideas and planning my next move…by night, I’m cooking the latest Blue Apron, catching up on Shameless, playing with my dogs and most likely ripping out carpet somewhere in my house. Even if there are days where I don’t leave my office, I like to at least throw on a piece of jewelry that makes me feel good and oftentimes it is my Dana Seng Jewelry initial necklace. My style is casual, always pants (I’ve never been a dress-wearer, but I’m trying) and I love a good blouse, like the one I’m wearing. I mostly wear vintage or antique jewelry, and my initial necklace from Dana Seng fits in perfectly.

Lauren

When she’s not busy building her photography empire, Lauren Newman, a Florida-born, California-dreaming entrepreneur is exploring Nashville, always on the lookout for new places to shoot. Photography is her passion and so is traveling. Her style is romantic with an edge, often pairing a pretty dress with a leather jacket. Her Dana Seng Jewelry is an initial birthstone ring–she chose an L for her first name, done in garnets for her birth month of January. It pairs perfectly with her other gold, delicate rings and is exactly her jewelry style. She likes wearing rings when she’s out on a photoshoot because every time she clicks the camera, they sparkle!

You can follow Lauren on Instagram here.

Alyssa

Documenting her daily outfits and inspirations has been something that has come natural for Nashville fashion blogger Alyssa. She has been writing Dreaming Trees since 2014 where her creativity flows and her bohemian style is put front and center. Her Dana Seng birthstone initial charm necklace easily transitions from her nine to five day job, to her photoshoots she executes for her blog. She chose an A for her first name set with Peridot for her August birthday in a necklace. As you can see, mixing her initial necklace with her usual Southwestern silver rings and other delicate gold necklaces fits her style and she makes it her own! Whether Alyssa is wearing a vintage dress or a new trendy designer, her Dana Seng necklace can blend with either and easily layer with other jewelry.

Five Investment Pieces You Need In Your Jewelry Wardrobe

Gem Gossip

I’ve been collecting fine jewelry for over fifteen years now and it is interesting to look back on pieces that I purchased in the beginning. I like to ask myself if those items were a good investment and part of evaluating that is knowing how much wear I’ve gotten out of each piece since purchasing. Your investment is only as good as how much joy and wear the piece of jewelry is providing for you–I am a firm believer in that!

But what if you don’t know where to start? Let’s say you’re new to collecting fine jewelry and only own a few odds and ends. You’ve got to start somewhere and being able to create a look by accessorizing your daily outfits with these pieces is a must. So let’s start with a list I’ve compiled of the five investment pieces you need to have in your jewelry wardrobe. These are staples that are meant to be classics, which never go out of style and will continue to get worn for years to come. These are pieces you should not feel bad for splurging on and rightfully so. These are future heirlooms, diamond encrusted, solid gold, hefty pieces that will be worth the same, if not more later on.

The history behind the next stop on my Seattle #JewelryRoadTrip is quite fascinating. Just a block away from Hotel Vintage where we were staying, the walk to Fox’s Seattle was easy and beautiful. Upon entering the shop I knew it was unlike any other place I’ve been to before.

Open since 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, US suffragettes paraded NYC, and Arizona & New Mexico were admitted into the US as official states, Fox’s opened its doors to the public. The shop sold mostly gems, little knick knacks, and some jewelry, taking a chance at this fortuitous business. It was unfortunately struggling and needed to be sold. It was then purchased by Sid Thal in 1948, keeping its name Fox’s Gem Shop only because the new owners couldn’t afford to paint over the sign.

The store grew over time, eventually becoming the leading retailer in fine jewelry, but had always been a labor of love for Sid Thal and his wife. Sid apparently was quite the character! Known around town in the social scene and iconic for driving around a Classic Austin “London Cab” and sporting a British bowler hat. These attributes were later used to help market the jewelry store. Their daughter, Joy Thal joined the family business in 1975, along with her artistic husband Chai Mann, and have been at it ever since! It was such an honor to meet the pair during my visit. They have a discerning eye when it comes to jewelry as well as being able to articulately create a luxurious space for said jewelry.

I spent most of my time while visiting Fox’s with Chai & Joy’s daughter Zoey who officially began working at the store in 2003, where her stint was only supposed to be temporary, but she obviously fell in love with everything about the jewelry world. She was named President in 2013. Most recently Fox’s changed their name from Fox’s Gem Shop to Fox’s Seattle and moved locations to where it situates today, just outside The Fairmount Olympic Hotel. Calling the store beautiful is quite the understatement. My visit lined up well with the unveiling of their newly launched Todd Reed boutique, the only jewelry store to have a mini boutique consisting of Todd Reed anywhere else!

Fox’s Seattle is quite proud of the designers they feature, as they are invested in them emotionally, which radiates through and through! They have been a huge fan and supporter of Alex Sepkus and his work, carrying his jewelry for over 25 years! Fox’s loves Alex Sepkus’ one-of-a-kind pieces and they make certain they get dibs on his very best. I was enchanted by their selection of his pieces–I had to create a cool stack incorporating his work. Fox’s taught me that every piece is finished by hand under a microscope!

I love learning about new designers–the longer I’m in this industry, the less I am actually already familiar with, so finding someone new is exhilarating! Enter SUWA, a Japanese jewelry company known for their precision when setting stones. They follow the facet pattern on every gem to position it in exact alignment with its neighbor. I loved their rough diamond octahedron pendants and totally want one! They do some incredible things with rough diamonds as well as faceted.

Mixing Fox’s designer repertoire was seamless–case in point: my stack featuring Todd Reed, Atelier Zobel, and Arman. Big names, bold looks. Like jewelry a little more on the dainty side? Fox’s Seattle has you covered too! A favorite designer, Sethi Couture bring on the layer-ready delights, each meant to be passed down through generations. Their selection of Gurhan Jewelry is also quite top notch. I died a little over the 24k yellow gold spike necklace. I’m sure it has a legitimate name, but I’m going to call it the spike necklace!

Thanks everyone at Fox’s Seattle for welcoming me into your gorgeous store! It was so great meeting everyone and sharing your passion for a few hours…I can see why you are so proud of the legacy of this store and it will no doubt flourish for years to come! If you’re in the Seattle area, be sure to stop by, you won’t want to miss it!

May Is Gold Month, Celebrate with Some Gold Trends!

MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip

The allure of gold is unlike any other metal–it conjures up so many feelings when I look at my favorite yellow gold bracelet brought back from Italy by my grandparents over 20 years ago, or when I wear my gold hoops that I purchased when I graduated from high school. I can sense the power, the value and the weight of the gold, but I can also feel the memories, the sentiment, and the love behind each piece. Celebrating gold is something I do everyday, as it is hands-down my favorite metal used for jewelry, so having an entire month dedicated to GOLD and promoting everything about it makes me happy! Over at May Is Gold Month, they have committed to spreading the knowledge of karat gold, promoting the wearability of gold with weekly trends, even providing some deals and contests for readers as well. For me, it’s a passion I can stand behind too, right there with them!

My love for karat gold jewelry has brought me on so many journeys with my #JewelryRoadTrip and working with LoveGold for two years, I’ve put on some miles all in the name of gold. I love the fact that gold has been found on every continent and it is my lifelong dream to be able to pan for gold and actually find some! I like to relate my quest for finding and featuring gold jewelry stores/designers on my blog as being similar to the gold miners of the big Gold Rush of 1849. In fact, it is one of my most favorite things to research and learn about. The power of gold is depicted best in situations like the California Gold Rush, where hundreds of thousands of gold-seekers put everything on the line in search of one thing. Gold’s impact reached far greater than just the discovery of it alone and it will always remain the number one selling metal for luxury and jewelry items.

How you wear and style karat gold jewelry is a whole different realm of gold. My biggest tip would be to try new ideas and trends–don’t ever wear the same pieces of jewelry every single day for the rest of your life! If you need some suggestions, May Is Gold Month has put together some weekly trends that you can easily focus on and I’m here to help suggest ways of taking each and making them your own. Let’s start from the top!

MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip

Trend #1: GOLD HOOPS

A gold jewelry staple that will never go out of style, gold hoops are a piece of karat gold jewelry you must own! Thick or thin, large or small…the style and size does not matter, it’s how you wear them and what you wear them with that is most important! I like to wear mine stacked on one ear, with each being similar in size and style. I left my other lobe bare to give it a dramatic effect. Karat gold hoops can really add a spice to your style–a small addition with a big impact.

MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip

Trend #2: LIGHTLY LAYERED

This is a great trend because you can combine lots of small, karat gold jewels to create one big, impactful look. I’ve always had a thing for tiny gold bracelets and each one has a unique style. Some are from Italy from my grandparents so they are very sentimental to me, while one I bought from a gold kiosk in the middle of the mall, and another is from Kay Jewelers. Wearing them all together is fun and every time my arm moves, they move around with me. The small karat gold rings are fun to stack and layer as well, so both types of jewelry play off one another.

MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip

Trend #3: GOLD RINGS

This trend comes way too natural for me–I don’t ever leave the house with just ONE gold ring. However, there’s a skilled art to stacking rings and piling on whatever you have just won’t cut it. I like large, elongated rings to go on the biggest finger–the middle finger–and that works as a good starting point. Combine rings that have a special meaning with pieces that are trendy. I love the geometrical trends that are happening right now, so I opted for a lightweight, but still 14k solid gold version of this trend to cut the cost. One thing is for certain though, whenever you buy a piece of karat gold jewelry, it is an investment that you won’t regret.

MayIsGoldMonth | Gem Gossip

Trend #4: SYMBOLISM

Gold jewelry is often highly symbolic, whether it’s a talisman, a good luck charm or a piece of jewelry that means something more than what meets the eye. For me, I have many karat gold charms in my life that hold a symbolic meaning like my Figas, and my lucky locket passed down to me by my Gram. My newest additions are the lapis scarab (if you follow me on Instagram, I’ve sold two large lapis scarab pieces recently and sort of regretted selling–and then I found like mini version of it just recently on my trip to DC, from The Antique Guild) and a gold heart ring box that holds an almost identical miniature version of my engagement ring, recently purchased from A.Brandt + Son. The charm is so neat because it opens and closes, and the craftsmanship is impeccable.

Trend #5: WRIST BLISS

What a dueling pair of wrists! My bracelet style is quite bipolar–I love a great karat gold Victorian hinged bracelet but then I also can go very modern, chunky with a large, heavy men’s Cuban Link chain. Talk about opposites! I love both for different reasons, but that’s the beauty of having different styles and karat gold jewelry has SO many styles. I’ve collected the Victorian gold bracelets over the years from my job being an appraiser, but the Cuban Link chain is my husband’s! I hope to own a matching one some day…one that actually fits though! His is huge on me!

Trend #6: NECK CANDY

Necklaces are the type of jewelry I own the least of, but surprisingly that has been changing lately! I think it’s because I like wearing necklaces that are more than just a chain and a pendant or charm. That’s when I got the bright idea of turning my gold cross charm bracelet into a necklace by adding a gold bracelet to each end and extending the length. It easily transforms it into a close-fitting statement necklace that everyone asks about…and even better, each cross has a story. I’ve also added my Fox & Bond Mini necklace to the mix to make the look more interesting. The Mini is a miniature solitaire ring which features a special engraving on the inside.

My Jewel Box: Antique Baby Rings + A New Chain

My Jewel Box, Gem Gossip My Jewel Box, Gem Gossip My Jewel Box, Gem Gossip

As I’ve been taking the time to truly curate my personal collection (by selling some of my rings all here) I also took the time to step back and look at what pieces make me most happy and figuring out what I really need in my collection–what is missing? One realm of my collection that puts a smile on my face is my antique baby rings. I’ve hunted these down in various locations all over the US, and on eBay…they are usually inexpensive so impulse buying is ok, and they are able to accumulate faster and without regret more easily than other types of jewelry. So many positive about them! I’ve been looking through my baby rings and also keeping up on eBay with what is currently available. I pulled out some of my wider pieces and took some photos, along with my many monogrammed baby rings–mostly M’s, D’s, or random initials.

I’ve also been wearing necklaces lately after going through a period where I never wore a single necklace for years! I would have to thank Fox & Bond Jewelry as well as The Dowry for my wedding gifts which made me fall back in love with necklaces. These two necklaces have been a part of my wardrobe day after day. I realized I wanted another gold chain to pair with the rather dainty ones that mostly make up my necklace inventory. One that had some more weight to it and an interesting link–not like a rolo chain or snake link. Luckily this stamped date necklace came across my screen while checking emails one day! Sherri of Great Smoky Mountain Estate Jewelry remembered that I collect date rings–and although not a date ring exactly, the necklace featured in the last picture had its very own hand-stamped 1926 on it. I caved and bought it, now wearing it almost daily. It is such a substantial piece and it was clearly something I’ve been missing from my collection all along.

What new pieces have you added to your collection lately?!
