High Jewelry Made a Big Impact at Paris Couture Week

Haute couture is one-of-a-kind creations crafted from the finest materials by skilled artisans using century-old techniques. Haute couture had humble beginnings. In 1858, an English couturier, Charles Frederick Worth, established the first haute couture house in Paris championing exclusive luxury fashion for the upper-class woman and coining the term “fashion designer” in lieu of the basic dressmaker. Today, haute couture is still synonymous with high-quality materials and workmanship. And when haute couture meets haute joaillerie (high jewelry), the result is transformative! The jewelry becomes an extension of the designer’s vision for his or her collection creating a complete story – one that is truly a work of art!

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI AND ELEUTERI:

Giambattista Valli accessorized his haute couture collection, comprising of ethereal tulle gowns, draped silk chiffon dresses and embellished minis with exquisite vintage jewels from Eleuteri. The jewels focused mainly on bracelets featuring a glorious 1950s French amethyst and turquoise piece as well as a intricate jade and gold design from David Webb and several Tubogas wristwatches from Bulgari.

GUO PEI AND CHOPARD:

The Chinese designer made a name for herself when she dressed singer Rihanna in yellow couture for the MET’s “China through the Looking Glass” gala and red carpet. For her haute couture collection, she collaborated with Chopard paying homage to the golden era of haute couture and Hollywood icons of the 50s. The results were a perfect fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, high fashion and exquisite jewels.

The deep jewel toned hues of Pei’s dresses paired effortlessly with Chopard’s the Silk Road collection, which featured an emerald bib necklace, diamond and pearl drop earrings and an amethyst pendant necklace. The Chopard jewels complemented the opulence and extravagance of Pei’s couture collection perfectly.

Next stop on the Seattle #JewelryRoadTrip was Alexandria Rossoff Jewels & Rare Finds, a stone’s throw away from where we were staying, Hotel Vintage. We walked to the shop which is located on 4th Avenue; lucky for us it was a beautiful and sunny summer day in Seattle. If you’re planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest, I would highly recommend the summertime. Alexandria’s store has been on my radar for quite some time, in fact, back in 2010 when I would write about stores I hope to visit one day, this store was one of my features. I also named Alexandria Rossoff my favorite Facebook “Like” back in 2012. And one of my most favorite people in the jewelry industry, Levi Higgs, actually interned at Alexandria Rossoff’s back when he went to the University of Washington for his undergraduate degree. He now lives in NYC and works for David Webb.

I had so much anticipation going into this visit that excitement wouldn’t even begin to describe it! Meeting Alexandria for the first time was like meeting a longtime friend, as she has been in the jewelry business since 1980. She has worked in every aspect of this business and is a wealth of knowledge, as well as being regarded as the antique jewelry expert in the Seattle area. Her business has changed addresses a few times over the years, which has allowed Alex to creatively depict the feel for each storefront and reinvent her brand. Her partner brings a unique aspect to her antique jewelry business, with the ability to design jewelry, hand-engrave and make waxes for casting. This adds a whole new dimension to the store.

Walking into Alexandria Rossoff Jewels & Rare Finds, you’ll notice the elegance of the store paired with some Hollywood Glamour. The floor to ceiling windows allow some glorious sunlight to fill the entire space, easily becoming a selling tool as the gemstones light up with sparkle. The engagement and bridal selection is filled with antique and vintage diamond rings, along with some alternative options, like sapphires, rubies, even pearl suites fit for that stunningly beautiful wedding day look! I love the display fixtures and how each told a story–whether it was color-coordinated, gem-coordinated or era-coordinated–the vignettes help put together a look. And boy, did I get busy putting together some looks! Hope you enjoy the photos above, fixed with captions to depict pieces you can easily shop online. If you see pieces I’m wearing that aren’t online, simply email [email protected]

Alexandria Rossoff is a must-see if you’re in the Seattle area! Next time you’re there, snap some photos and tag me on Instagram–I’d love to see how my visit inspired yours.

I asked for feedback…you gave it…and I listened! Someone requested I feature more budget-friendly jewelry, so I put together a list of 20 items all under $500 that I would want to have in my own jewelry box! Going on a virtual shopping spree is my favorite thing to do (well, besides the real thing) so I hope you enjoy this post just as much as I have putting it together! Coral Pink Paper rose jewelry

It fairly common knowledge that roses stand for beauty, love and affection. A rose is a symbol completion, perfection and is effective communicator of emotion. What is uncommon though, is that different colors of roses have different meanings. White stands for purity, innocence and respect, yellow for friendship and warmth, red stands for love and passion and pink denotes sweetness, happiness or gratitude and finally black roses stand for death or hatred. I remember these meanings being drilled into my head a decade ago, by a friend of mine who organised “Rose day” celebrations at his college. But then I never bothered to ask what coral or coral-pink roses meant. That is until now.

Coral Pink Paper rose jewelry
After quick online search, I found out that the meaning depends on how pink or how orange the rose is. In the end , however, they all seem to signify love, desire and appreciation. When I started working on a set that required coral pink flowers (more pink than coral though) I wanted it to portray the emotions that it stood for – something that was beautiful and desirable.

If the stunning hot pink aka Maharani Pink Bridal Jewelry, depicted passion and richness then this pink Paper rose jewelry set is about being more elegant. The Indian bride from South Africa for whom I made this set in march, specifically wanted jewellery that matched her coral pink and purple lehengha. Instead of sourcing for coral pink roses ( and frustrating myself in the process as they are hard to find) I used baby pink roses and distressed them with orange metallic paint. To match the work on the skirt I used gold and purple beads to complete the set.

Coral Pink bridal flower jewelry

The set comprises of a short necklace, drop earrings, single strand hair ornament matha tikka (a term coined by my student to describe a single strand matha patti) and Haath phool bracelets. I made the bracelets adjustable with a gold cord tie up.

I think that this is the shortest post in JOS history, but for once I wanted to let the pictures do the talking. Do share your thoughts on it. I am thankful that I was able to write the bulk of this post last week as I had a nasty fall on Monday and my head is still quite not right. I hope that it gets sorted by my birthday tomorrow.

I hope you found it interesting
Cheers

Jewels at my Doorstep: Stacy Nolan Jewelry

Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip Stacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem GossipStacy Nolan Jewelry | Gem Gossip

When jewels arrive at my doorstep, it’s a celebration! Here’s the rundown of my day when Stacy Nolan sent me some jewelry to play with and shoot.

9am: Stacy Nolan Jewelry arrives at my doorstep. 4 pairs of earrings. 2 necklaces. 1 bracelet. 4 rings.

9:05am: The box has been ripped open, now disheveled over in the corner with Chiefy & Frankie sniffing at it frantically. I’m talking aloud to myself and not a soul is in the house. “Omg I love these! Oh woah, these huggie earrings are exactly what I’ve been scouring the Inter-webs for!” I simply can’t help myself when I’m excited about something, all sanity goes out the window.

9:15am: Hair is a hot mess, pajamas are still on fully coated in Chiefy’s hair, no makeup on except for some remnants of yesterday’s cat eye and unnecessary bold lip–I start “styling” this pajama look with Stacy Nolan‘s pieces and the power of jewelry comes into play. I am immediately feeling myself because of the jewels–a diamond briolette can shine! And hell yeah this fringe necklace is somewhat elegant with pajamas, I can see how everyday wear on this baby is a definite.

9:30am: I’ve already established how I want to wear the Stacy Nolan jewels, so I take a few quick shots with my iPhone for memory’s sake, and start to get a feel for what I think the look and outfit should be. Most definitely girly–I feel very sexy with the fringe, the diamond briolettes and the threader earrings. The collection also has a daintiness to it, although when worn all together, it is hardly dainty. Ok, got it!

10am: Shower, indefinitely, and then start getting ready. For makeup, I stuck with a very similar look that I wear for special occasions, except adding the eye shadows that feature sparkles in the palette of my Naked by Urban Decay. I chose a pink lip color to add to the girly vibe and also play off the pink faux fur stole. For hair, I left the bed head look and stuck with my 3 day old curls. Didn’t want the look to be too overdone or too polished. For nails, I kept my natural nail showing and simply glittered the tips only. It’s a fun and easy nail look–takes some practice but no need to be an expert.

11am: Put together the outfit and now back to styling the jewelry. I opted for wearing the circular black diamond briolette stud earrings in my first holes, then got creative with the threader earrings and huggies. Rather than wearing them normally, I put one pair on each ear–so threaders on my right ear (holes 2 and 3) and huggies on the other side! I also didn’t thread the earrings all the way through–they conveniently have earring posts on each end and I wore them as if they were long dangle earrings. I love the long length and really makes them stand out this way. Necklaces, bracelet and rings were more straightforward with the styling.

11:30am: Off I go, hopped into the car ready to scout out a perfect location to shoot the photos! Our first stop was a historic building with a pretty yellow door. As cute as it seemed, the lighting was way off and after a few shots we moved on. I kept admiring the earring look I was sporting and couldn’t get over how perfect the huggies fit my ears. We pulled up to a green oasis with some blossoms and greenery that instantly worked. After some makeshift pruning to a few of the sticks and leaves, it was go-time.

1pm: Back at the house and already going through pictures! The multi-color diamond briolette bracelet and matching necklace really stand out in the photos. The lapis tear drop fringe necklace also stuns and I’m glad we got a few shots of the coordinating earrings, done in white onyx.

2pm: …I’ve already emailed and placed my order with Stacy Nolan the pieces that I want! lol

4pm: Once all the photos have been selected, I sadly pack up the jewelry to be mailed back. One of the diamond briolette rings finds a new home in my jewelry box instead of the package, and I wave off the pieces one-by-one as they go.

Pieces used for the photoshoot:

14k yellow gold multi-colored diamond briolette bracelet 2.30 carats total, Price: $1,195

14k yellow gold matching multi-colored diamond briolette necklace 2.43 carats total, Price: $1,450

18k yellow gold fringe drop necklace with lapis and diamonds, Price: $2,760

18k yellow gold matching fringe drop earrings with white onyx, Price: $3,750

14k yellow gold black diamond briolette threader earrings, Price: $155 each

14k yellow gold circle studs with black diamond briolettes, Price: $365

14k yellow gold black diamond briolette huggie earrings, Price: $270

14k yellow gold black diamond briolette ring, Price: $200

14k yellow gold black diamond briolette ring with black pave diamonds, Price: $485

14k yellow gold white diamond briolette ring, Price: $575
