GET THE LOOK FROM THE MALDIVES: GREEN HUES IN SEVAN BICAKCI RINGS

As you might have seen my wedding ceremony took place in the Maldives earlier this year. I recently went back to this dreamy destination for the first time since that wonderful trip.  This time I came to my beloved Maldives to shoot a jewellery campaign for a Gem Kreatives‘ client.

I had just a few minutes to capture my Maldives gold jewelry look in the beautiful surroundings of the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli. My green hued outfit from the London-based Ukrainian knitwear designer Kukhareva blended in perfectly with the St. Regis Maldives design. You already know my love for craftsmanship, so this is why I like Kuchareva’s pieces: you can tell how much effort she puts into fabric creation in her London workshop.

You might have noticed that I’m obsessed with green at the moment. One of my favourite Sevan Bicakci rings with intaglio carved in the stone and painted inside to give this ring a light green colour was just meant to be worn in Maldives. This is one of Sevan Bicacki‘s sculptural rings, and it features three doves as a symbol of hope inspired by the Noah and the Ark story.

I completed my jungle look with H Stern gold ring crafted with diamonds and noble gold, unique to H Stern jewellery collection. This Genesis H.Stern Ring looks much softer against the skin due to the champagne colour of its diamonds.

GEMOLOGUE BOOK SIGNING, SOTHEBY’S: KEEPING THE MAGIC OF JEWELLERY ALIVE

Delighted so many of you could make it to my book singing and talk with the Head of Sotheby’s jewellery department. I was worried people wouldn’t be able to make it on a Friday afternoon, so I’m really grateful we had a full room. Many of you who couldn’t make it in person tuned into my Instagram Live. So a big thank you to everyone for finding time to join me. I enjoyed giving this talk; the questions you raised during the Q&A touched upon so many interesting topics with regards to the world of jewellery, it was a joy.

If you want to catch my next jewellery talk and future book signing, subscribe to my newsletter below.

I love travelling to places where jewellery is as much a part of the conversation as politics. But quite often I encounter communities where the people are not crazy about jewellery, I think, because they’re not aware of its extraordinary history and powerful symbolism. Perhaps it’s because I’m a Taurus that I have such a strong and emotional bond to beautiful works of art. I am drawn to the beauty of an object and I find great comfort in its magnificence.

I’ve always dreamed of owning precious objects of sculptural beauty, not as a show of extravagance but to be close to something of great mastery. As I’m typing this blog now sitting on the train from Paris, the sun’s rays from the window hit my diamond rings and beautiful sparkles dance and play all around me. It’s so magical. It’s the way jewellery catches the light that captivates me and I love watching how other people’s jewellery sparkles with flashes of different colours. Were not pearl earrings and diamond tiaras meant to be worn in candlelight to illuminate the face and create allure?

It’s easy to compare jewellery to art, but the art world has its own niche and code of conduct. Jewellery takes you into another circle of talented individuals, each as artistic as the next. It defines you in a society where jewellery has become democratized and more of a statement of style than status. No need to seal a letter with your signet ring; we use password protected emails now. No need for physical possessions when you’re away from home travelling the world, experiencing different cultures, tasting exotic foods and engaging in inspiring activities. No need to keep jewellery when you can buy synthetic diamonds with no lasting value. Even I wonder whether my children will want my jewellery as heirlooms. Our notion of jewellery is getting destroyed. So my goal is to keep that dream alive by featuring such amazing jewellery designers and experts the world has to offer. It’s a beautiful sparkly world and I’m so proud to be a part of it and share it with you.

I am very sentimental about my jewellery – the gifts I’ve received from loved ones, my engagement ring, my anniversary ring, my first pair of Tahitian pearl earrings that I bought for myself from Goldman Sachs with my first pay cheque, to me jewellery captures the memory of a special occasion much like a photo. Every time I wear these sentimental items, I’m transported back in time to a memory I’ll treasure forever. It’s magical!

I want to inspire others to feel the same way I do about jewellery. The moment I began GEMOLOGUE, it became obvious to me just how many women have no interest in jewellery – about 7 out of 10, I’d say. So my objective became to attract more people into the jewellery world by educating them in a fun, approachable way, and showcasing different styles of jewellery like the ones you can find in my new book. I want to show people that jewellery is not only a shiny possession but something of great historical and cultural value, dating back centuries. I hope my book will inspire everyone to be a jewellery lover and look at jewellery in a different light.

Let’s bring jewellery back into the candlelight. Tell all your friends about the GEMOLOGUE jewellery book and let’s keep the magic of jewellery alive!

Would love to hear why you’re interested in jewellery and what it means to you. Please leave me a comment below.

Vintage charms found at M. Flynn

A dazzling curtain of crystals which doubles as artwork…all the best jewelry books one can fathom…flawless displays…sparkling jewelry of all kinds…and one mascot named Stu. This reads as the ultimate recipe for a beautiful, successful jewelry store, which happens to be a real-life place. It is called M. Flynn Jewelry and the shop is located in Boston, Massachusetts. I was lucky enough to visit the store on my #JewelryRoadTrip, where I learned all about its beginnings, what it has to offer, as well as the two sisters behind the namesake: Megan & Moria Flynn!

Opened in 2009, the store fostered the sisters’ love for all things sparkly. Elizabeth Taylor is a jewelry icon for all of the world, but for Megan & Moria, she is everything! They wanted to create a space where they can serve multiple needs for their clients and the store has evolved over the past several years, growing along the way. Their are a few important features of M. Flynn Jewelry–so let’s break down each one!

Their own line of jewelry: if you need classic, every day wear pieces the M. Flynn line is just what you’re looking for. Gemstone rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings make up the line, including bridal options as well. They also have a collaboration collection called the Gates Collection which they’ve created along with an interior designer/blogger that is highly popular–Erin Gates.

Designer jewelry: M. Flynn has been expanding each year, adding new designers they feel are a good fit for both their store and the Boston area. Some of the best selling and favorites are Adel Chefridi, Page Sargisson, EF Collection, Misa Jewelry, Mociun, Loquet, Kelly Bello, and more.

Bridal jewelry: An ideal destination for all your wedding needs, M. Flynn can create your dream ring! They also have a large assortment of finished pieces from their own designs, as well as top designer engagement rings from Anna Sheffield, Mociun, Misa Jewelry, and Page Sargisson. They also have a selection of men’s wedding bands too!

Estate Jewelry: All periods, all styles–M. Flynn loves it all, so if it is delicate and sentimental or retro and unique, you will find it here. Lots of rings, some earrings and necklaces, and a large assortment of charms. This section is ever-changing and always one-of-a-kind, so check back often!

Fashion Jewelry: I know Gem Gossip does not cover fashion jewelry at all, but it is noteworthy that M. Flynn does carry fashion jewelry–lots of different designers, such as Lizzie Fortunato, Pamela Love, and Alexis Bittar–and great price points for gift-giving season.

Gifts/Accessories: Who knew jewelry-related gifts were so fun?! Gem Water bottles, jewelry travel cases, fragrances, cards, candles, jewelry books…you name it, they have it! I need this store in my life during the holidays!

Custom design: Besides all the above amazingness, M. Flynn also can custom design your dream piece. Whether you bring in family stones or have nothing at all except for a few slight ideas, they are here to help with that. You will be loving the finished result and coming back for more.

Hope you enjoy browsing the above photos from my visit–I know you will have heart-emoji eyes while doing so. Megan & Moria are truly so nice and have such a passion for what they do–I also have major respect for Megan getting her gemology degree at GIA. Not many store owners do so and I think that’s amazing! Next time you’re in Boston, pop in and say hi–make sure to pet Stu for me!

Top Five Pieces I Wanted to Take Home With Me at Couture 2017

Couture | Gem Gossip

This year the Couture show opened its doors to hundreds of buyers and press from all over the world, while I walked in a day late of opening day, I was quick and eager to dive into all that it had to offer. Each designer stood beaming behind their booths, creativity on full power and all their blood, sweat and tears front and center under the grappling lights. More on the show in general in a few days, but I wanted to focus in on five pieces, from five different designers that I felt stood out to me. These pieces may not be the flashiest or have the biggest gemstones; they are pieces I would want for my personal collection–items I could see myself wearing and enjoying on a daily basis. There are lots of jewels at Couture that were bold, striking and great for editorial shoots–but translating them into every day wear for an average American didn’t quite fit in my eyes. Yes these jewels might be fun to drool over, to take a photo of, or to just simply stare at, but as I stood there thinking to myself, “what if I owned a store in Nashville, what would I buy that would fit my audience?” I realized that sort of changed my entire thinking while browsing. Most of the time when I’m in “Gem Gossip mode” I’m one-sided in my thinking, focusing on what pieces would photograph well, what would my followers want to see, what would get the most “likes.” So here are my top five pieces that I surely wanted to take home with me at Couture 2017!

1. Anthony Lent Crescent Moonface bangles: being celestial obsessed must be commemorated somehow and these bangles fit the bill in many ways. First off, they are wearable and go with just about anything, for any occasion. Secondly, they are timeless and can be passed down through generations. Best part is they are each hand-made by Anthony Lent himself in his Philadelphia-based studio.

See the Anthony Lent website here.

2. Anything in opal from Jacquie Aiche: If you’ve visited Jacquie Aiche’s booth at Couture, you know–every year she outfits her spot in gems and mineral specimens that have you feeling like you’ve been transported to her world. And once inside, there’s no shortage of jewelry–each corner and nook is filled with displays, dripping in jewelry. And that’s exactly their mantra–cover yourself in their pieces and style yourself to the max. Every necklace, bracelet, earring, ring and body chain complements one another, and now we know why she has so many devote “tribe” members!

See the Jacquie Aiche website here.

Couture | Gem Gossip

3. Stackable, easy on-and-off chokers from Suzanne Kalan: ok, we all have realized chokers are still going strong in popularity and if you’re really wanting to invest in something that is well-constructed, easy to wear, and gorgeous all-around, I suggest these! Suzanne Kalan is known for her baguette diamond wizardry and she follows through again in the choker design department. At the show, the chokers were displayed in large bunches, stacked together and they looked just as good, if not better when worn! There’s no clasp or ties, it is flexible, so you can take it on and off SO easily!

See the Suzanne Kalan website here.

Couture | Gem Gossip

4. Enamel surf boards from Tara Hirshberg: I loved all the charms I was seeing at Couture this year and these enameled surf boards were a definite highlight from the debuting designer. I have never surfed before in my life and honestly am frightened beyond belief of the ocean, but even with those pitted against me, I have never wanted a gold surf board more in my life! haha! I love the colors used, the size of them and the wearability. Creating surf-related jewels came naturally for LA-based designer Tara and her ocean living and ocean loving life.

See the Tara Hirshberg website here.

Couture | Gem Gossip

5. New diamond bow rings from Arik Kastan: I always look forward to seeing the new designs from vintage-inspired Arik Kastan. This year’s new bow rings had my head spinning and jaw-dropping. They are perfect to stack and fit right in with other antique pieces, as seen here stacked with some other fun Arik Kastan rings. Loving all the green agate too! Tough decision though choosing which bow–the top or bottom??

See the Arik Kastan website here.

PRECIOUS ENCOUNTER : SOPHIE BUHAI

Sophie Buhai homonymous brand launched in 2015, distinguished by its collection of timeless silver jewels. Each piece is handmade in Los Angeles by master craftsmen using recycled metals to minimize the environmental impact. We are thrilled to now have her stunning jewellery available in our Mont Thabor boutique, exclusively in France.

What is your first jewellery memory ?

I remember sitting on the carpet on my grandmothers bathroom looking through her jewellery collection. I must have been five. She would always show me her pieces, she had a great mixture of deco pieces and also mid-century silver. She was a great teacher. Most importantly, she shared with me how special jewellery can be as a marker of time in ones life, and the power it has being handed down through generations, to tell stories of the past.

What’s the first piece that you designed ?

It was the Egg pendant.

IMG_7509

What is your favorite stone ? Why ?

I love pearls. They from the sea which I love, they are completely classic, and can look very modern at the same time.

Do you have a piece of jewellery that you wear all year-round ?

I wear all of the silver year round. I love the classic hoops and basically sleep in them.

Who are your favorite jewellery designers ?

Elsa Peretti, Calder, Art Smith, Man Ray.

Elsa Peretti

What are your greatest design influences ?

Eileen Gray, Diego Giacometti, Coco Chanel, my grandmother, my mother.

What do you listen to in your studio ?

It’s a real mix. Everything from Chopin, Nick Cave, to Reggae.

If you weren’t a jewellery designer, what would you do ?

I think I would do something with art direction in films. I love to create an atmosphere. That or interiors.

Which famous people (living or dead) inspire you the most ?

The women in my family. Strong independent working women.

What is your dream destination ?

I love Crete in Greece. I’m dying to go back. I love the rustic simplicity, ancient history, warm people, and wild landscape.

PRECIOUS ENCOUNTER: ORIT ELHANATI

Il y a quelques jours, nous avons accueilli une nouvelle marque parmi nos créateurs. Nous avons posé quelques questions à la créatrice pour qu’elle vous présente son univers chargé d’histoire !

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 45 years old with a Danish and Middle Eastern background and work as a jewellery designer, handcrafting jewellery from my showroom here in Copenhagen. I love what I do, and I feel very grateful everyday.

What is your first jewellery memory ?

I have always been infatuated with my grandmother and her friends sitting on the porch in Tel Aviv dripping in gold. This has imprinted itself in my mind and has followed me throughout my life – I love the way jewellery is made to passed on through generations and becomes a part of the woman and her story. I remember the exact moment when I knew it was my calling – it came to me in a dream and I have never looked back since. Gold has always fascinated me, I love working with gold, burning it, taking it apart only to reassemble it and burn it again until it reaches perfection.

What’s the first piece that you designed ?

The PALMA tag is the first piece I designed. This was the first time I started playing with letting the gold drip, and what I had learned, really came out in this particular piece.

What is your favorite stone ? Why ?

I definitely have to say opals intrigue me. I make collections, and each piece always has a special mark and is never the same. The opals add to this creating truly unique pieces of jewellery that can never be found again.

Do you have a piece of jewellery that you wear all year-round ?

Each piece I make has a special place in my heart. It is very difficult for me to single one piece out. The Rock Ring is very special to me as it one of the first rings I made, and became the starting point for my sculptural and organic design, however I love wearing my new pieces and combining them with the old.

Who are your favorite jewellery designers ?

I love Fernando Jorge’s design. It is overwhelming handcraft, but yet so poetic, where the stones speak for themselves and you can feel the thoughts behind each piece.  Francisca Villa makes amazing jewellery, with her magical stories and each pieces is unique and can never be found again, which is difficult to accomplish. I also love Solange Azaguri’s edgy and modern approach to her jewellery that with a humoristical touch feels just right.

What are your greatest design influences ?

I am inspired by my environment and people around me. Nature, the sea, the clean lines of the desert, rocks and nature is deeply inspiring to me. I am not religious, but I believe in these greater powers that have such a force, that we cannot comprehend. Each thing I create whether it be a piece of jewellery or something in my home is somehow inspired by different all these different places and people. It is very important to me that there is a feeling behind everything I do. I am in love with the works of Zara Hadid that has incredible ways of creating beautiful, yet functional design with soft and curvey lines. Gaudi’s mysterious universe as well as  Henri Matisse’s sensual lines and touch to name a few that have inspired me.

What do you listen to in your studio ?

This really changes with my mood and the direction I am going. At the moment I am really into David Bowie, and French Jazz music. Last month it was Aino Venna and Nick Cave.

If you weren’t a jewellery designer, what would you do ?

I really cannot imagine doing anything else, but I have always been fascinated with art and handcraft, so it would probably be something evolved around this. Or perhaps a landscape architect, or I would be designing fast cars…You never know…

Which famous people (living or dead) inspire you the most ?

I feel it is hard to name just one person that has inspired me. I am inspired by different elements and moments, and do not have an icon as such. The world is filled and has always been filled with so many extraordinary and talented people. It is a lot about the energy and a small moment that inspires you. I love how Bianca Jagger combines the feminine and masculine – it is like fire, it is this force I use a lot when creating my jewellery.

What is your dream destination ?

We are going to Sicily this year – I have always dreamt about walking the streets of Palermo and later this year I am going to Marrakech – the colours and Middle Eastern mysticism draws me.

Is there any particular places you would recommend in Copenhagen?

My showroom is right in the city and I usually start my mornings at Atelier September for my coffee and breakfast. After work we go to Bon Marche for aperols that has late sun and at the moment I am really a fan of Spaghetteria that has a very foreign vibe. I love the architectural lines and atmosphere I get when going for a walk in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek or The Royal Stables at Christiansborg Palace to clear my mind and get a clearer vision of what I want to create and achieve.

Timeless Classics: Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambras

We could never imagine having the thought, “Oh no… Not another Alhambra bracelet…” when we see these iconic Van Cleef & Arpels pieces come into CIRCA’s buying room. Our client was pretty sure the style had been played out. “No! In fact, VCA’s turquoise Alhambra just makes some of our customers completely crazy.” “How crazy?” she asked. We wrote down our offer, to which see responded, “I see. I’ll be back with the Alhambra necklace.” Marvel at other classic examples and their stories below!

Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra Necklace (Mother of Pearl)

We got this stunning mother of pearl Magic Alhambra in our buying room just in time for our client to trade up for a Mother’s Day treat this year. There’s nothing like flowers for mama!

Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra Earrings (Malachite)

More than half of CIRCA’s clients return to sell to us again, which speaks volumes about the service we provide. We recently purchased these VCA malachite Alhambra earrings from a client who has been coming to us for many years. We strive to provide the best price for your signed jewelry, and to give you the best selling experience as well.

Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra Bracelet (Mother of Pearl & Black Onyx)

Always a favorite, this Alhambra bracelet in mother of pearl and black onyx is one of the iconic stars in the VCA lineup. The Magic Alhambra debuted in 2006. Its charms of varying sizes is what separates magic from others in the collection. Our client decided to hold on to the necklace but felt the bracelet was “too matchy”. When a piece you have doesn’t quite fit in your collection it may be time to visit CIRCA.

It was Edwina de Charrette de la Contrie who, finding no bags to her taste, decided to create herself the one of her dreams. Catching the virus of leather and sewing, she created her own brand for our greatest happiness. Made by hand in the workshop, the accessories are real objects of desire. At WHITE bIRD, there are already two fans of the customizable bags.
